Hospice care provides invaluable support and comfort to patients and their loved ones during challenging times. Facing a terminal illness can be overwhelming for the patient as well as his or her loved ones. Those who have a loved one with a life-limiting diagnosis often wonder, “What is hospice, exactly? Can hospice benefit my family?”

What is hospice?

  • Hospice is a type of health care for patients with an anticipated life expectancy of 6 months or less, when curative treatment is no longer an option, and the goal is enhancing quality of life. Hospice is person-centered, with a focus on care coordination, communication, and understanding and honoring the patients goals.
  • Hospice provides interdisciplinary care where a team of health professionals address physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patient while also supporting the patient’s loved ones.
  • Hospice care is typically provided where the patient lives: a private home, nursing facility, or other health care community. This allows the patient to be in a familiar environment, surrounded by personal and significant items, memories, and family.
  • Hospice may include periodic visits to the patient or round-the-clock care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week based on the needs and wants of the patient and family.
  • Hospice is the only health care that includes bereavement care (available during the illness and for more than a year following the passing of the patient).
  • Hospice is a Medicare benefit. It’s also covered by most private health insurance plans.

Key benefits of hospice care:

  • Comprehensive Support: Hospice care offers a multidisciplinary approach to care, including medical, emotional, and spiritual support. Patients and families receive personalized attention from a team of healthcare professionals dedicated to managing symptoms and enhancing quality of life. Each care plan is tailored to the specific needs of the patient and his or her family.
  • Pain & Symptom Management: Hospice prioritizes pain and symptom management, ensuring that patients are as comfortable as possible throughout their journey. With a focus on relieving pain and discomfort, hospice care allows individuals to spend their remaining time in dignity and peace.
  • Emotional Well-being: Coping with a terminal illness can be overwhelming for both patients and families. Hospice care provides counseling and emotional support to help navigate feelings of grief, fear, and uncertainty. By addressing emotional needs, hospice care fosters a sense of peace and acceptance.
  • Family Involvement: Hospice care encourages family involvement in decision-making and caregiving, providing support and guidance every step of the way. Families can spend quality time with their loved ones, creating meaningful memories and cherishing moments together. In addition, hospice care focuses on ensuring a peaceful and comfortable transition for patients, allowing them to be surrounded by loved ones in familiar surroundings.
